All Aboard the Diane Rehm

Have you ever wished you could sail the Mediterranean with a wacky, wobble-voiced NPR chat show host who sprays perfume on her contact lenses? Well, for $3500++ (US), you can have your big date with destiny, buddy! (Taking my jars of pennies to the Chevy Chase Bank change machine tomorrow.)

Diane Rehm, star of the provocatively named "Diane Rehm Show," has teamed with a cruise line to offer an over-priced group vacay to Italy, Croatia and Greece. Yeah, it's going to be just like your third-grade "Straight-A Trip" to The Epcot Center, except Diane Rehm is chaperoning instead of the mom who churned her own butter and baked Jesus-shaped sugar cookies.

Now that I think about it, I think I'll spend my "fun money" hitchhiking in New Zealand with a nude Sam Donaldson.

Here's the info on the trip. If you listen to NPR, I'm sure you've already heard about it:

Cross-Culture Journeys invites you to experience the Jewels of the Mediterranean with special hosts, Diane Rehm and KUER. Sail aboard one of the world's most luxurious and modern yachts, the Royal Clipper, while exploring the finest ports and enclaves of Italy, Croatia and Greece. Embark August 28th on this trip of a lifetime to discover the treasures of ten ports: from Venice, Dubrovnik, Corfu and Capri to Rome. Spend your days exploring Renaissance-era cities, quaint fishing villages and the heavenly scented lavender fields of the island, Hvar; and your evenings engaged in thoughtful conversation with Diane and John Rehm, Tasha Cook and fellow public radio supporters. Join us on this Mediterranean odyssey as we uncover the colorful history, priceless reliques and pristine beaches of Italy, Croatia and Greece. Be still my heart.

If you sign up, will Carl Kasell record a message for your answering machine telling folks when you'll be home?

You will probably only have heard about this on the radio if you live in Salt Lake City. KUER is the Salt Lak NPR station.

Anon-- Me too!

Peter-- That would be great, although most of my friends would have no idea whose voice was on the machine.

Anon-- The ad has been in heavy rotation on WAMU, Washington DC's NPR station. I definitely do not live in Salt Lake City.

Wow, that's the first time I've seen a picture of her. After listening to her voice on the radio I had always thought she was like 195 years old!

Michael-- She's not unattractive, especially for someone who, as you pointed out, sounds like she's on death's doorstep. I think that photo of her a little goosed up, but still...
